The open ground right in front of Castillo San Felipe Del Morro (1539-1790) proved fatal to many English soldiers in 1598 and Dutch soldiers in 1625.
The primary function of the castle is to protect the harbor. The fort lies between the sea and the old town, at the entrance of the San Juan bay and harbor.
